17th Year - Amethyst

It is the most valuable transparent, coarse-grained variety of the silica mineral quartz. Fine amethysts are featured in the British Crown Jewels and were also a favorite of Egyptian royalty. The stone's name is derived from the Greek word amethystos, meaning "not drunken," because people of ancient times believed it to protect the wearer from drunkenness. It is mined in many countries, Zambia being a significant source for Amethyst.
