It is the pale pink-violet to light violet species of the mineral spodumene. It is named to George F. Kunz, the legendary mineralogist who first described the gem in 1902. It is strongly pleochroic, meaning there is a color intensity variation when viewed from different directions. A beautiful 47-carat kunzite ring that President Kennedy purchased as a gift for his wife but never had the chance to give her, sold for more than $ 410,000 at a Sotheby's auction of the Estate of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in 1996. Deposits are found in Brazil, Afghanistan, Madagascar, Myanmar, Pakistan and the United States.
