Obsidian, a dark volcanic glass. It forms when lava cools quickly. It has been used for tool making since 21,000 B.C American Indians used it for arrowheads, and the Aztecs used it for sacrificial knives and mirrors. Today, it is used for dating; the stone weathers slowly at a uniform rate, and the thickness of the weathered layer is measured microscopically and gauged against known standards to give a date in years. Obsidians are found in Iceland, Italy, U.S.A, Hawaii, Japan and Java.
