Obsidian, a dark volcanic glass. It forms when lava cools quickly. Rainbow Obsidian is a type of black obsidian that when highly polished and exposed to strong, bright light reveals lustrous layers. The stone is made of volcanic glass, and the layers are caused by the pyroxene's nanoparticle inclusions.

It has been used for tool making since 21,000 B.C American Indians used it for arrowheads, and the Aztecs used it for sacrificial knives and mirrors
