It is the most valuable transparent, coarse-grained variety of the silica mineral quartz. Fine amethysts are featured in the British Crown Jewels and were also a favorite of Egyptian royalty. The stone's name is derived from the Greek word amethystos, meaning "not drunken," because people of ancient times believed it to protect the wearer from drunkenness.
